Change Your Corner of the World

I’ve never forgotten the advice I received years ago from former Niagara College vice-president Beth Weldon, sadly now deceased, taken far too young as the result of pancreatic cancer.

She was rare in empathizing with my frustration, which I now better understand was partly because I was a right-brained, system thinker in a setting ruled largely by left-brained linear decision-makers.

Beth told me, ‘Brenda, maybe you can’t change the world, but you can change your corner of the world.

That’s how we all need to think about what we can do to impact global economic, environmental, and social well-being in our organizations, neighbourhoods and communities. The best part is that making a difference for others also positively affects one’s own life.

Many are worried about the lack of progress in addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations in 2015 as the world’s most pressing issues.

We all should be worried because these 17 goals provide a comprehensive framework to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030.

Clearly, we’re not there yet, and the clock is ticking. Urgent and transformative action to address the SDGs has become even more critical.

Why should you care about them, and what can you do about them?

Vision for a Better World and a Better Community

The SDGs encapsulate a vision where no one is left behind. They are designed to tackle the root causes of inequalities and injustices, recognizing that sustainable development must integrate economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection. This holistic approach fosters a sense of global solidarity, urging all nations and communities to collaborate towards common objectives.

It’s important to remember no one expects any one person to have the answers, which is why it typically begins with someone being brave enough to call the meeting. If not you, then who?
